Following the success of 2018 blockbuster Raid, Ajay Devgn once again plays the role of the stern IRS officer Amay Patnaik in Raid 2. Raj Kumar Gupta again directs it. This time, he is fighting Dada Bhai (Riteish Deshmukh), a known figure with something to hide. Does the sequel live up to our expectations? Let's find out.
Powerful Performances Drive the Story
Ajay Devgn reprises the role of Amay Patnaik with ease. His acting is dignified and cool, but without the element of surprise that we witnessed in the first.
Riteish Deshmukh, on the other hand, commands attention. As the suave and witty Dada Bhai, he brings depth to his character, and the villain becomes one of the movie's strongest points.
Amit Sial, Supriya Pathak, and Saurabh Shukla play supportive roles that add strength to the group and all contribute to the story.
Direction & Storytelling: Gripping but Familiar
Director Raj Kumar Gupta repeats the same formula that succeeded in the first one—tense showdowns, political undertones, and moral grayness. The second half takes off with spine-chilling moments, but the first half does lag a bit. The script plays it safe too many times, venturing into safe zones. For a film that addresses corruption, we would have liked it to take a few more risks.
Music & Technical Touches
The music has both good and not-so-good parts. Some songs fit the film's mood, but a few seem out of place and break the flow. On the technical side, the camera work and set design are impressive. The world feels real, rough, and down-to-earth, making the realism that Raid fans liked even better.
What critics are saying
The movie has garnered different reactions:
- Koimoi: A solid 4.5/5, praising the sequel for its strong writing and impactful performances.
- The Times of India: 3/5, as the film remains true to its concept but gets too carried away with being serious.
- 123Telugu: Appreciates the engaging second half but critiques the slow build-up.
- Lensmen Reviews: Calls it a forgettable sequel that does not bring much that is new.
Movie Earnings Summary
In spite of polarized responses, Raid 2 flew high, collecting more than ₹70 crore in the first four days. Word of mouth will determine its long-term box office performance, but the opening figures are a testament to the interest and loyalty of the audience towards the franchise.
Final Verdict: Worth Watching, With Tempered Expectations
Raid 2 might not be very new or different, but it remains true to what made it good before. The acting is strong, especially by Riteish Deshmukh, and the second half of the movie is interesting, making it worth watching. However, the film uses common themes and starts slowly, which may disappoint viewers wanting something new. If you loved the first Raid, this one will satisfy you and make you feel connected. Just don't expect it to be better than the first.
Rating: 4.8 out of 5 star
