Chhaava Movie Review: A Grand Effort with Mixed Reviews

The highly awaited historical drama "Chhaava," in which Vicky Kaushal plays the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Laxman Utekar directs, has finally hit the screens. Although the movie tries to exhibit an important part of Maratha history, the critic and audience response has been average.

A Powerful Performace by Vicky Kaushal

One of the highlights of Chhaava is undoubtedly Vicky Kaushal's passionate and dedicated performance as Sambhaji Maharaj. Most of the fans have appreciated his acting, terming it the soul of the film. A social media user wrote:

"Vicky Kaushal does great in #Chhaava, but the other actors are just okay. The movie feels long, and the background music doesn’t match the time period. Still, it’s good. The last 20 minutes are very powerful and stay with you. I really recommend watching it in theaters!"

Although audiences enjoyed the acting of Kaushal, some of them felt the movie was not balanced. They believed that the supporting characters failed to make a lasting impression. On Reddit, a user commented that the film was "neither too bad nor too good," and described it as a "one-time watch."

What do critics say?

  1. Critics have provided varying reviews, ranging from 2.5 to 4 stars.
  2. Rediff's Prasanna Zore awarded the film 4 out of 5 stars. He noted that it tries to tell the story of Sambhaji Maharaj's life.
  3. Zee News commended the film for its historical value and emotional appeal.

But not all was good.

  1. Indian Express's Shubhra Gupta gave the film 2.5 stars and described it as "ultra-loud, ultra-violent, and exhausting."
  2. Chatterjee of NDTV also gave it 2.5 stars. He said Vicky Kaushal's performance was good but the film lost its potential.

The Last Decision: Is Chhaava Worth Watching?

If you enjoy historical dramas and Vicky Kaushal, then you will have to watch Chhaava for its action scenes and performance. But, get ready for an overly long movie, poorly paced, and some disappointment in the plot.

If you enjoy Maratha history and good war movies, then this film might still be worth watching. But if perfection is what you are looking for, then you have to compromise.
