The long-awaited L2: Empuraan is now released, continuing the story of Stephen Nedumpally, or Khureshi Ab'raam, played by the great Mohanlal. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, this action-packed sequel to the 2019 hit Lucifer stretches the story even wider, exploring the international crime syndicate ruled by its mysterious main character.
But is it all the very high hopes it is worth? Have a look at the L2: Empuraan review!
A Bigger, Bolder, and More Intense Narrative
Unlike Lucifer, which was political in Kerala, L2: Empuraan is set to open to an international battle for power, politics, and crime. The film uncovers who Khureshi Ab'raam really is and what his vast empire is, as well as the threats from his dangerous foes.
- Suspenseful action sequences
- Crime drama with politics and underworld incorporated
- Sweeping storytelling
The scale is hugely impressive, but the script is sometimes too dense, and this can make the film too much for some to take.
Power-Packed Performances
- Mohanlal as Khureshi Ab'raam is irresistible on screen! He owns the screen, presenting us with both the astute planner and the merciless leader with such ease.
- Prithviraj Sukumaran as Zayed Masood – His return adds substance to the film, with a continuity touch from Lucifer.
- Tovino Thomas as Jathin Ramdas – His development as a leader is one of the movie's intriguing side stories.
- The action becomes more thrilling with Indian actors Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Singh, and global actors Jerome Flynn and Eriq Ebouaney.
Though performances are good, some characters lack utility, especially when considering the ensemble cast.
Box Office & Financial Success
- Budget: ₹150 crore
- Pre-release business: ₹100 crore (₹70 crore all-India rights, ₹30 crore overseas)
- Day one collection: ₹22 crore net in India
The movie broke Malayalam cinema records, establishing a new record in the industry. But due to its size, L2: Empuraan must gross ₹225 crore globally to be counted as a true blockbuster.
What helps and what fails?
Successful
- Mohanlal's commanding presence – A treat for his fans!
- Breathtaking cinematography & global locations – An eye-popping visual feast.
- Action sequences – Grand and intense.
- A bigger and grander story – Expands the Lucifer universe.
Omissions:
- Complex storytelling – Some sections are too packed.
- Pacing issues – The first half is slow but the second half is faster.
- Underdeveloped characters – Some lead actors do not get sufficient screen time.
Final Verdict: Is L2: Empuraan Worth Watching?
If you enjoyed Lucifer, L2: Empuraan is a movie you should watch due to its action, good visuals, and Mohanlal's excellent performance. Even though the movie is not perfect, it is a gripping movie experience which the audience of this kind of movie will enjoy.
